The Impact of Pollution on Children

The Impact of Pollution on Children

2020 Oct 22nd

A study was done by Dr. Lilian Calderon Garciduenas and her research team on what impact air quality has on children living in major cities. They found in the study that air particulates had components in them like metals that get inhaled in the system which can cause long lasting, harmful effects. They compared these results to studies on children in lower pollution level cities and the results showed that children living in higher pollution level areas had significantly higher fluid levels of brain autoantibodies. It is an important issue because signs of brain autoantibodies are featured in people with neuroinflammatory diseases. With a 400% increase in MS cases in the air pollution heavy city, it shows a need for more studies to be done on the impact of air pollution. The study also showed that there was a breakdown in the blood brain barrier which allows particulate matter to enter the body which can cause harmful neurotoxins, bacteria and viruses to enter the body. Consistent exposure to air pollution can cause constant damage and have significant consequences later in life, which is why air pollution is such an important issue to tackle and why air purification is needed. In the United States there are 200 million people that live in areas where pollutants are exceeding the current standards causing long lasting health conditions.
